Tangram: shapes, symmetry, and creative thinking

Activities with the seven tangram pieces for geometry, composition, and exploring multiple solutions.

A tangram uses seven simple shapes to build many different silhouettes. Children rotate, reflect, and combine pieces, discovering that the same total area can be organised in different ways.

Geometric transformations

When a piece does not fit, it can be rotated or flipped. Name these actions and notice what stays the same: the shape and size. Older children can compare angles and symmetry.

Silhouettes and free creation

Copying a silhouette practises analysing a complete shape, while free creation encourages story and representation. Alternate between them and ask the child to use all seven pieces.

More than one route

Two arrangements can represent the same object in different ways. Photograph the solutions and compare them. Creative problems can have more than one valid answer.

A practical activity to try at home

  1. Cut a tangram from a paper square using a checked template.
  2. Build a house or animal using all seven pieces.
  3. Create a second version and describe the transformations used.

Tangram joins geometry with imagination and gives direct feedback because the pieces immediately show whether an idea fits.
