Mental-math games to play at home

Short, adaptable activities for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and estimation.

Mental calculation does not have to mean long sets of exercises. Short games let children test methods, notice number relationships, and check their own results without the pressure of a grade.

Build the target number

Choose a target such as 24 and four smaller values. Each player tries to reach the target with operations they know. Addition and subtraction are enough for younger children; multiplication and brackets can be introduced later.

Estimate before calculating

At the shop or in the kitchen, first ask for an approximate total. Estimation helps a child detect impossible answers. Then calculate the exact amount and compare the difference.

Speed is not the only goal

Some children respond quickly, while others build a more reliable method. Ask for explanations such as “I changed 19 into 20, then adjusted.” Flexible strategies are more useful than memorising a single route.

A practical activity to try at home

  1. Choose a target number between 10 and 50.
  2. Draw four playing cards and use their values to approach the target.
  3. Give one point for the result and another for a clear explanation.

Five or ten minutes of regular play can build familiarity with numbers without making the activity exhausting.
